Family vs. Total Strangers – Who Gets You At Your Best?

I’ve read too many times that some RLSH feel like they’re a much better person in their RLSH persona, than they are in every-day life.  Some have said they’re not proud of the person they are in civilian life.

That doesn’t make any sense at all.  If you aren’t living up to the core of your RLSH persona in your every day life – WHY NOT?

Don’t your friends and family deserve all the best things within you?  Is a little integrity too much to ask?

This quote drove it home for me a couple years back:

“If you have only one smile in you, give it to the people you love. Don’t be surly at home, then go out in the street and start grinning ‘Good morning’ at total strangers.”  – Maya Angelou

I saw myself in that statement, and I began to consciously change this.  I’m not a perfect wife, mother, or sister but my family – the core of my life deserves all of my best.

You can’t be a rotten person at home (or at work) and later put on a mask and try to “make up for it” out on the street.  Be who you are, every minute of the day.

  1. Moxie,

I really think that I might have been part of the inspiration for this, based on things I’ve said on Heroes Network II and also on facebook. My point, I guess, was that I’m not always the most easy to get along with guy in a day-to-day basis or a competitive work environment. I could truly see where some people might think of me as a jerk. My flaws are many and too many to name.

But when the gear goes on and I become Geist, I am committed to being the best person I can possibly be. And I also try (often unsuccessfuly) to maintain that in Geist’s online presence.

But yeah, I get your meaning and intention. I’m still working at being a good guy 24/7 and depending on who you ask, the results are mixed at best. There’s more than one reason why my online friends are my closest friends.

But I love your concept and will not disagree with your intent nor meaning.

    All My Best,

  2. I agree completely and find myself guilty of this as well. I will follow your lead and make more of a conscious effort to be my best for everyone. 😉
